HRM Role in Training and Development (T&D)

HRM plays a crucial role in Training and development ensuring that employees consist with up to date knowledge and skills to meet organization goals and objectives. Training and knowledge sharing programs are the best aid for the skill and knowledge gaps. Below are the key areas in which HRM focuses on T&D.

👉Identifying Training Need (TNA)

Before organizing training program it’s essential to assess the employee skill levels. An effective TNA will help to develop a successful training program by identifying the employees competencies, knowledge level and abilities. It also enables trainer or the organizer(HRM) to determine appropriate type of trainings and necessary resources. There are three critical level of TNAs.

👉Designing an effective training program

Based on the findings of TNA, HRM designed the training program while addressing the following key areas.

  • Define training objectives.
    • HRM established training objectives to address the knowledge, abilities and skills(KAS) gaps identified in TNA. And it’s essential to align these objectives with the company goals.
  • Select the most suitable training methods.
    • HRM determines the appropriate training methods by considering factors such as audience, available resources and budget, the complexity of the content, time constraints and accessibility. Some of the popular training methods are e-learning, on-the-job, or virtual reality training. This can be selected by either a trainer or HRM depending on the situation.
  • Select the Trainer
    • HRM should select qualified trainers for the program. The effectiveness of the training will depend on the trainer's training skills. This can be either internal, external or virtual trainers depending on the content of the training.
  • Develop training content.
    • The training content will be developed to cover the identified training objectives. This also can be developed by either HRM or the trainer depending on the situation.

👉Implementing training program

After designing the training program HRM takes the lead in implementing the training by facilitating all necessary resources for both the trainer and the trainee. It’s important to monitor the progress of the training program from start to end.

👉Evaluating training effectiveness

After the training is completed, it is important to ensure the given training is successful and beneficial for both employees and the organization. A well-structured evaluation program helps HRM to ensure that the organization receives the expected benefits from the training. Gathering data and calculating relevant KPIs before and after the training will provide a clear assessment of the training program. If the results are positive then HRM focuses on further improvements to enhance the training effectiveness. In case of negative results, HRM will analyse what went wrong and take necessary corrective actions to ensure more effective training in the future.

👉Emphasize employee development and sustainability of the knowledge acquired from the training programs.

Effective training will always upskill the employee's knowledge, abilities and skills. After the training period, HRM ensures the continuous career development of the employee by evolving both technical and behavioral sides. With the good results of ROI evaluation, organizations offer career development opportunities such as promotions which help to sustain the acquired knowledge within the organization.
